International Nurses Day (IND)

12
May 2020

Although the holiday exists for more than one hundred and fifty years, only in January 1974 it was officially designated to celebrate this day on 12 May.

IND is celebrated since the foundation of The International Council of Nurses (ICN) – a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations in honor of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Florence Nightingale is an English social reformer, the founder of modern nursing who organized the tending to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853—1856). Nurses are specialists who hold one or more credentials depending on their scope of practice and education and operate as doctor's assistants, working with patients. Currently, nurses form the largest category of health workers, as a great number of health care services are provided exclusively by nursing staff.
