Lorhi, a Punjabi festival

January 2016

The bonfire is associated with Agni the Lord of fire. Parikrama is performed around the fire when people go around it clockwise repeating the phrase “let prosperity come and need be gone”. Prasad, the food offered to god, is shared after the ceremony and gifts given out. Members of the family exchange presents at the advent of Lorhi followed by a vegetarian feast in the evening. Dancing and singing go on all night around the fire. On the morning of the festival children go around from door to door, singing songs and asking for a treat of money or sweets. A traditional Punjabi dance of Bhangra can be seen during the festival. It is performed by men only.
