The World Day of Sea Mammals Protection

19
February 2020

This environmental date concerns the protection of whales and all sea mammals and other marine species. The World Day of Sea Mammals Protection has been celebrated since 1986, when the International Whaling Commission (IWC) introduced a ban on commercial whaling after merciless whale hunting has lasted for 200 years, leading to their near extinction. The moratorium applies to commercial whaling including selling whale meat. World Whale Day aims to raise public awareness of the need to protect this unique species as well as other sea mammals of which just 119 species survive to this day.
