Tunisia Republic Day

July 2020
Before proclaiming the Republic of Tunisia the country had been governed by Arabs, pirates, Spain and the Ottoman Empire. At the end of the 19th century, Tunisia fell under the domination of France though the Tunisia Bey remained the nominal ruler of the country. It was on 20 March 1956 that the country received full independence from France. On 25 July 1957, the Tunisian Parliament passed a resolution to abolish monarchy which implied deposing Bey Mohamed Lamine and proclaiming the Republic of Tunisia. Habib Bourguiba was elected the first president of Tunisia. Today, the Republic of Tunisia, the smallest country in Northern Africa, is considered to be the most politically stable country both in Africa and the Middle East.
