World Thyroid Day
World Thyroid Day was established to emphasize the prevalence of thyroid diseases and methods for their prevention. The aim of this new holiday is also to popularize modern prevention programs and to increase awareness of new treatment modalities of this organ. According to medical statistics, thyroid disease affects one third of the world's population. Thyroid Nodules can be detected among adult patients in about 30 per cent of cases; a goitre (British English) or goiter (American English) – is a swelling of the neck or larynx caused by iodine deficiency – in about 10-30 per cent. Meanwhile, most of the diseases of the thyroid gland (thyroid produces hormones and regulate the growth of cells and Metabolic Process) are considered as incurable. As for diseases caused by iodine deficiency they are preventable. For example through the general salt iodization programs held in different countries across the world.
