The League of Nations was founded on 10 January 1920 as a result of the Paris Peace Conference. Its primary goals included preventing wars through collective security and disarmament and settling international disputes through negotiation and raising the standard of living in the world. Sixty-three countries became members between 1920 and 1946. Out of the 44 initial entrants, 31 had taken part in the First World War as members of the Entente and 13 neutral countries. the United Nations (UN) replaced it after the end of the Second World War on 20 April 1946 and inherited a number of agencies and organisations founded by the League.
