Fridtjof Nansen (10.10.1861 – 13.05.1930) was a Norwegian explorer, oceanographer, social activist, and Nobel Prize laureate. He explored northern regions such as: the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Siberia, Spitsbergen, Franz Joseph Land, and the Arctic. He worked as Norway’s ambassador to Britain and his country’s representative to the USA. In 1920 and 1921, he was High Commissioner of the League of Nations for Prisoners of War and was in charge of the repatriation of POWs from Russia. In 1921, organised by the Red Cross, he was High Commissioner of the International Committee of Russian Relief that provided famine relief for the population of the Volga River region of Russia. In 1922, he was awarded a Nobel Prize for Peace.
