Greek Independence Day, national holiday celebrated annually in Greece on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453 when the Turks captured Constantinople following their occupation of Macedonia, Thessaly, and part of central Greek. The Turkish invaders introduced military feudalism but allowed the freedom of conscience to the local population. Greeks fought for their freedom. The date of March 25, 1821 is a major occasion in Greece’s modern history. On this day also known as the Day of National Revival Greeks have carnivals, concerts, exhibitions, and other festivities.
